Chapter 5 The True Face of the Demon
Chapter 5 The True Face of the Demon
"Come to my place for a bit." Su Jue inserted the key and glanced back at Fang Qi.
They finally rested before the sun completely disappeared below the horizon.
"You're back?" Inside the room, a smiling man sat on the sofa.
He heard the door open and got up to pause the TV. Only after putting down the remote did he realize that Su Jue had someone else behind her: "A friend? Let me see if there's enough food."
"My uncle." Su Jue found a pair of clean slippers, placed them on the ground, and pointed to Su Huai. "He raised me."
"And your parents?" Fang Qi asked subconsciously.
"I was murdered." Su Jue took off her school uniform jacket, tossed it onto the sofa, and collapsed onto the sofa before turning on the TV.
"Oh? I'm sorry, I didn't know..." Fang Qi realized he had asked the wrong question and quickly apologized.
"It's nothing, I'll watch some TV. Su Huai is cooking." Su Jue didn't pursue Fang Qi's question, but pointed to the kitchen.
Fang Qi nodded quickly, changed his shoes, and sat down next to Su Jue.
After a moment of silence, Fang Qi felt he should say something, so he asked, "By the way... is he your uncle? He looks about your age?"
"I don't know why, maybe it's related to his technique, but he won't tell me." Su Jue chewed on a grape.
"Is he also a sorcerer?" Fang Qi seemed somewhat surprised.
His gaze unconsciously drifted to the kitchen not far away, just as the door opened.
Su Huai slowly walked out of the kitchen, carrying a plate of still steaming green peppers and pork.
His eyes were narrowed to slits, and a smile seemed to always be on his lips, easily reminding people of the "smiling tiger" in novels.
"The food is ready. Come and eat! Shuangyu, there's also..." Su Huai turned to Fang Qi.
"Fang Qi." Fang Qi nodded and gave his name.
"Okay, Fang Qi." With that, he took off his apron and turned around to bring out three bowls of rice from the kitchen.
"Your nickname?" Fang Qi nudged Su Jue with his elbow.
"That's what he calls me now." Su Jue smiled, as if she was thinking of something pleasant.
Soon, the three of them enjoyed a delicious meal and began their dinner in the last rays of the setting sun.
"Su Huai, do you know any organizations that raise human-faced demons?" Su Jue suddenly asked in the middle of the conversation.
"Raising... such a bizarre thing should only be done by the 'Thousand Faces Cult,' since it's their specialty. But speaking of which, I think I have a friend there." Su Huai smiled.
"How come you have friends everywhere... What's so special about this organization?" Su Jue complained before asking.
"Special features? Just a Sichuan opera troupe that knows a little face-changing, nothing special. But you should still be careful, they're full of swindlers." Su Huai put two bites of meat into his bowl, then frowned. "It's too salty. Let's have some tea."
As soon as he finished speaking, a cup of tea appeared out of thin air in Su Huai's hand, startling Fang Qi so much that he couldn't swallow a mouthful of rice.
"Oh dear, I forgot there were other people here. This is my technique, don't make a fuss, it's only useful for this much." Su Huai took a sip and then complained, "It's bitter."
Fang Qi's mind was racing with thoughts, but they all pointed to one conclusion—
Su Jue's uncle is definitely a formidable figure!
"Oh, there's one more thing, is it possible for one person to... possess two spells at the same time?" Su Jue asked.
"Theoretically, it's not possible. I remember telling you that a person can only possess one quality. However, aside from the morgue, it seems that followers of other organizations can obtain some cheap abilities through faith in deities." Su Huai said indifferently, "You want them? You can't afford the abilities those things give."
"Okay, I understand." Su Jue nodded. He remembered that Su Huai had said that quality was equivalent to a character's attributes.
But the reason he asked this question was that, since the day he met Liu Xue, he clearly felt that the amount of his source had doubled.
Moreover, he inadvertently discovered that he could use the mirror-related techniques that should have belonged to Liu Xue, and that he was even more powerful than Liu Xue.
Just as Liu Xue marveled, his style did not limit the methods he used.
"Alright, I won't interfere with your work anymore. You should talk to Xiao Pei Pei. He's actually quite capable." Seeing that Su Jue didn't speak, Su Huai put down his chopsticks, wiped his mouth, and went back to his room.
"Oh, right." He suddenly stopped at the doorway: "Remember to wash the dishes."
Then, the living room fell silent.
"What do you mean now..." Fang Qi asked, looking at Su Jue with food in his mouth.
"Let's go find Pei Min tonight. He has to give an explanation for what happened, right? I don't believe a newcomer can handle this." Su Jue stacked all the empty bowls together and put them in the kitchen.
Soon, a curtain of shadow covered the entire sky, with only a few stars illuminating the moon.
The two headed towards the hospital, intending to report the matter to Pei Min. However, they were lucky enough to spot Pei Min taking a walk halfway there.
"Boss!" Fang Qi shouted and ran towards Pei Min, while Su Jue stayed where she was.
The city of Hirakawa is also bustling at night, with crowds jostling each other on the streets, quickly obscuring the view across the street.
A little while later, Su Jue saw Fang Qi return looking dejected.
"What happened?" Su Jue asked.
"That's what the boss said, cough cough: 'You guys created this mess, so you have to deal with it yourselves.' Basically, he's telling us to do it ourselves." Fang Qi mimicked Pei Min's tone.
"Then let's go take a look." Su Jue nodded and set off towards her destination.
The two walked for about two minutes, but one of them stood bewildered where Su Jue had just been.
It is Fang Qi.
"No? Where is he?" He scratched his head, then looked across the street: "Damn it, the boss is gone too..."
The neighborhood is very quiet at night, and this quietness is even more pronounced in the villa area.
What puzzled Su Jue even more was that Fang Qi hadn't said a word in all this time.
"You've been very quiet tonight," Su Jue said casually as she walked ahead.
He sensed that something was off about Fang Qi tonight. It wasn't just that he wasn't talking; there was something incongruous about this "Fang Qi" all over.
Su Jue clenched his fist, holding the distorted text tightly in his hand, his thumb and forefinger pressed firmly together.
"Really? Actually, I'm just too scared. Damn, why is this place so creepy?" Fang Qi muttered to himself as he slowly approached Su Jue.
"Die!" Fang Qi thrust the dagger in his hand toward Su Jue.
But then he heard the sound of the mirror shattering.
Before him, "Su Jue" shattered into a broken mirror the instant he was stabbed, scattering across the ground.
Fang Qi's forehead began to sweat uncontrollably, and he frantically looked around, trying to find Su Jue.
Just as he was about to run away, he saw a corner of a garment peeking out from behind a tree. He held his breath and slowly approached the tree.
He accelerated a few steps away from the tree and stabbed the dagger into "Su Jue," but all he got in return was the sound of the mirror shattering.
He collapsed to the ground, panting heavily as he backed away, wildly waving the dagger in his hand.
"Who the hell are you?! Aren't you supposed to be fire?"
In his panic, he seemed to see Su Jue, many Su Jue, surrounding him completely.
Su Jue and the others slowly raised their right hands, and clusters of flames reflected in Fang Qi's eyes.
"No...don't kill me! I've put a spell on the No. 3 bus, and it can explode at any time if I want to!" he screamed, liquid slowly flowing from his crotch, accompanied by his cries.
"A bus? Oh...why don't you give it a try?" Su Jue smiled.
"You forced me to do this!" Fang Qi roared.
On the highway in Pingchuan City, bus number 3 was running as usual.
At that moment, a line of text lit up at the rear of the car. Just as the text was about to shatter, another line of red text appeared, ignited a flame, and burned the entire text to ashes.
"You should have noticed by now, right? Alright, it's my turn to interrogate you. Are you from the Thousand Faces Cult?" Su Jue asked, but the flames in his hand did not subside.
"I, I am... Ah!"
Fang Qi was speaking when a huge figure swept past, nearly tearing his body in two.
Su Jue immediately distanced herself from it. It was a human-faced demon bound by iron chains. According to Su Jue's initial observation, it had at least twenty faces on its body.
The severely injured Fang Qi could no longer maintain the operation of the technique, and his face returned to its original appearance, which was Wang Wei whom he had seen in the villa during the day.
The human-faced demon sucked his head completely into its body, and Su Jue heard Wang Wei pleading with the demon as he left—
"Don't kill me."
A moment later, Wang Wei's body was "spit out" by the human-faced demon and fell to the ground. At this point, he no longer had a face.
On the human-faced demon's body, where it had just been attached to Wang Wei, a face exactly like Wang Wei's slowly grew out, and that face was also wailing: "Don't... kill... me..."
The human-faced demon slowly wriggled and turned its body towards Su Jue's direction.
Su Jue clenched his fist again after loosening it: "We're doomed."
