Chapter 90 Mother's Child
Chapter 90 Mother's Child
Helena sat in the main seat, her gaze sweeping over the faces of the arguing girls, like someone counting a flock of birds in a cage.
My thoughts drifted away from the noisy restaurant, the round table and the still-arguing detectives fading into the cold walls of the courtroom.
In the courtroom, the silver shackles on her wrists had been removed, and her boss, Rosalind, stood before her.
The moment she saw the president appear in front of her, her knees buckled.
Having known the other party's true identity from the moment he appeared, and witnessing him casually kill one of the detectives, Helena naively believed that her boss had come to save her.
This hypothesis was further confirmed after the chairman locked everyone inside his own power and then came to her and broke the shackles.
Unfortunately, the other person's cold gaze made Helena's heart race, and she collapsed to the ground, unable to utter a single word.
"Little Helena," Rosalind crouched down to look her in the eye, "you betrayed the Witches' Guild without a word and got caught by the detectives. I'm very disappointed in you."
Helena's lips trembled as she said, "Yes, I'm sorry! I didn't betray you... I just wanted to avenge my sister..."
"But you shouldn't have failed to notify the organization beforehand. Logically speaking, your actions already constitute betrayal."
Rosalind stood up, took a folded handkerchief from her pocket, and slowly wiped the dirt off Helena's cheek.
"So... President, are you here to punish me?"
"Hmm... That's what I originally intended to do. But now, I don't want to anymore. After all, in London, I found something I'd been searching for for a long time but hadn't been able to find."
Helena could tell that Rosalind's smile wasn't fake; she could tell that the other woman was genuinely happy.
This relieved her, and she immediately became curious about who the person the president was talking about was.
"You stay here for now. So as not to be a burden to me." Rosalind put the handkerchief away and looked down at her.
Helena mustered her courage and asked, "Who...who are you looking for?"
"I am the child who was left behind after my mother was killed by that despicable detective when she was born. Now, I can finally sense the presence of that person."
Helena wanted to ask more, but Rosalind had already turned around. Darkness began to spread beneath her feet, gradually engulfing her body. Without turning her head, she said, "Accept the identity I've arranged for you."
Helena's vision was then enveloped in darkness. When she opened her eyes again, she found herself in the same prison as Li Ang and the others.
However, she was luckier than the others; she wasn't in a prison cell, but in a small, private room. But she couldn't go out on the first day, and her meals were delivered by the jailers.
She was not released until the next day when voting on executions could begin.
She followed the jailer through corridor after corridor until she arrived at the restaurant. When she pushed open the door, she saw Li Ang.
The man who had harassed her in the garden and fought with her in the collection room was now sitting at the round table, looking at her expressionlessly.
She immediately tensed up, but then she remembered that her boss's ability to distort other people's identities and memories meant that this man shouldn't know her.
Helena strode forward, but her composure was shattered by a single sentence from the man.
"Wait? How do you still remember me? The student council president said your memories were all reset!?"
That's what she said at the time. But she regretted it as soon as she said it.
This statement is tantamount to telling everyone that she knows Li Ang and that she knows some inside information about the game.
But so what? She's a counter now. A neutral unit. She can't be killed by the witch, nor can she kill anyone on her own initiative; she can't vote, nor can she be voted on.
She doesn't need to please anyone, nor does she need to be wary of anyone.
All she had to do was sit there, keep track of the time, count the votes, and watch the detectives suspect each other, test each other, and vote to execute each other.
Then you just need to get out alive.
"That's enough." Li Ang's voice pulled her back to reality.
Helena blinked, refocusing her gaze. The area around the round table was now a chaotic mess.
Li Ang tapped the table. "Halftime. Everyone, calm down for a bit."
Seeing that Helena didn't say anything, no one objected.
Caltacia leaned back in her chair, Isabella lowered her head, and Boudica stared at the table, seemingly lost in thought.
At this moment, Li Ang stood up from his chair.
"Where are you going?" Caltacia's eyes followed him.
"Going to the restroom," Li Ang said calmly. "What, are you coming along?"
The other person spat and turned their face away.
Charlotte stood up from her chair, her long white hair swaying gently behind her shoulder. "I'm going too."
The gazes around the round table became subtle at the same instant.
Sherry looked at her curiously, Boudica's eyebrows furrowed, and Emily lowered her head, her face slightly flushed.
"These days..." Isabella said casually, "you can even go to the toilet together? And a man and a woman at that?"
Charlotte didn't bother to explain, and instead walked straight towards the door, with Li Ang following behind her. The two of them walked out of the restaurant one after the other.
After leaving the restaurant and walking for a while to make sure no one was following, Charlotte stopped in front of a stone pillar, turned around, and looked at Leon.
"What do you want to do?"
Li Ang took the dark-colored ID card out of his pocket, turned it over, and handed it to her.
In Charlotte's eyes, the word "illusion" in "illusionary witch" on her identity card disappeared, leaving only one word—witch.
"I didn't take any action last night," Li Ang said. "My identity token looked like this when it was dawn."
Charlotte paused for a moment, then said, "So you've become a witch now?"
"It seems so. It appears that if I don't take any action, I'll trigger the first ending option. If someone investigates my true identity now, the result will be that I'm a witch."
"Lilith won't check you. After all, you've already been cleared of suspicion."
"I know. But I'm wondering if I can still use my ability to kill at night."
"Have you guessed who the witch is?"
"No. But the area is already very small."
The two remained silent for a moment.
Charlotte changed the subject, "You still haven't told me about Helena."
Leaning against the stone wall, Li Ang recounted in the simplest language his encounter with Helena, her actions at the Viscount's mansion, her trial, and her imprisonment.
Of course, he didn't mention Charlotte's identity during this time, only saying that Helena was arrested by him and Charlotte together.
"So she's with the Witches' Guild." A cold glint flashed in Charlotte's blue eyes. "She's a real witch."
“Yes. But she’s a counter now. Theoretically, she’s a neutral unit.” Leon paused. “She might not be lying. Lying doesn’t do her any good in this game.”
"Who knows? Now I'm more interested in trying to vote for her later."
"I have no objection. However, I would prefer to speak with her alone."
"She won't talk to you. She has a lot of issues with you."
"Then let's give it a try." Li Ang straightened up from the stone wall. "Go back and find an excuse to call her out."
Charlotte glanced at him, nodded, and turned to leave.
